I still don't understand this could someone help me?

Two positive numbers have a difference of 5. The larger number is one more than twice the smaller. Find the two numbers.

Let the larger number be x

and the smaller number be y

 

x - y = 5     the difference is 5

 

x = 2y + 1   the larger number is twice the smaller plus 1

 

Replace x with 2y + 1 in 1st equation

 

2y + 1 - y = 5

y + 1 = 5

y = 4

 

the smaller number is 4

 

x-y = 5

x-4 = 5

x = 9

 

the larger number is 9

 

Answer 2

Let x be the smaller of the two positive numbers.  Then the larger one must be x+5.  RIGHT?

 

Larger is 1 more than twice the smaller MEANS  

x+5 = 1 + 2x.

 

Do not proceed until you UNDERSTAND the translation from word into math equation, in the above paragraph.
