x - y = 5 the difference is 5
x = 2y + 1 the larger number is twice the smaller plus 1
Replace x with 2y + 1 in 1st equation
2y + 1 - y = 5
y + 1 = 5
y = 4
the smaller number is 4
x-y = 5
x-4 = 5
x = 9
the larger number is 9
