Question

Two splice plates are cut from a piece of sheet steel that has an overall length of 19 5/8in. The plates are 9 1/4in and 6 11/16in long. How much material remains from the original piece if each sawe cut removes 1/16in?

We made 2 cuts, each of which also removes an extra 1/16 inch...

Total removed from original length: 9 1/4 + 6 11/16 + 1/16 + 1/16 inches.

 

9 + 6 + 1/4 + 11/16 + 1/16 + 1/16

= 15 + 4/16 + 13/16

= 15 17/16

= 16 1/16 inches removed

 

Total left:

 19 5/8            19 10/16

-16 1/16        - 16 1/16

                      3 9/16 inches left
