cannot figure out this word problem please help !!!

Question

In 2008, the amount spent by a typical American household on food was about $6450. For every $10 spent on food away from home, about $14 was spent on food at home. Find the amount of household spending on food in each category.

For every $24, $10 was spent on away, that is 10/24, or 5/12.

For every $24, $14 was spent on home, that is 14/24, or 7/12

 

5/12 of 6450 = 2687.50

7/12 of 6450 = 3762.50
