Algebraic expression word problems - HELP!

Question

Four students are assigned a project. They must each write an even portion of their summary paper. If they each already wrote one page of introduction and the paper is suppossed to be 40 pages, how many more pages does each student need to write?

They are supposed to do an equal amount, each of the four have already written one page, so each of the students need to write an additional 9 pages so that they will each have ten pages and a total of forty

 

4x + 4 = 40

 

Subtract 4 from each side you get

 

4x = 36

 

divide by 4

 

x=9

Answer 2

Four students are writing an even portion of 40 page long paper.

Divide 40 by 4 to find how many pages each student has to write.

 

40/4 = 10 pages.

 

Subtract the number of pages each student has written from the number of pages each student has to write to find how many more more pages each student has to write.

 

10 - 1 = 9 pages.

 

Each student needs to write 9 more pages.

40 - 4 = 36

36 / 4 = 9

 

Each has nine pages to write.
