An employment agency specializing in temporary construction help pays heavy equipment operators $123 per day and general laborers $90 per day. If thirty people were hired and the payroll was $ 3525, how many heavy equipment operators were? employed? How many? laborers?

Let x = the number of heavy equipment operators hired.  Since 30 people were hired in total, the number of laborers hired is 30-x.

 

     x*($123) + (30-x)*($90) = $3525

 

     123x + 2700 - 90x = 3525
