a²+2a+1 = (a+1)²

 

so (a²+2a+1)/(a+1) = (a+1)²/(a+1) = a+1

 

a² -1 = (a+1)(a-1). This is a general formula a²-b² = (a-b)(a+b) and this formula is very important and we see this formula a lot. 

 

so (a-1)/(a² - 1)  = 1/(a+1)
