A small can of an energy drink contains 8 more calories than 2 times the number of calories in a shot of the same energy drink. If a small can and a shot contain a total of 101 ?calories, how many calories are in each? drink?

Let x = the number of calories in the small can

Let y = the number of calories in the shot

 

x = 8 + 2y  

x  + y = 101

 

Now, substitute the x value.

 

8 + 2y + y = 101

8 + 3y = 101

3y = 93

y = 31 calories

 

Now, substitute back in to solve for x.

 

x + y = 101

x + 31 = 101

x = 90 calories

 

There are 90 calories in the small can of energy drink, and there are 31 calories in the shot of the same drink.
