Factor the polynomial completely.

3x²+32xy−176y²

Factors of 3x² are:

 

     3x and x

 

Factors of 176y² are:

 

     44y and 4y

 

Since the middle term is posifive, we need the bigger product to be positive ... we know one of the factored terms is negative because of the negative on one of the original terms

 

The factored expression is:

 

    (3x + 44y)(x - 4y) 

 

When we multiply this out (using FOIL), we end up with the original expression.
