If Jo's total sales is s, then she makes commission of .05(s - 40,000).

 

For example, if Jo made $40,002 in total sales, she'd make 5% on the $2 extra she sold. .05(40,002 - 40,000) = .05(2) = .10.

 

If we distribute the .05(s - 40,000) from above, we get .05s - 2000. We have to add that to the $270 weekly salary to get her total of $860.

 

.05s - 2000 + 270 = 860

           .05s - 1730 = 860

                    + 1730  + 1730

                         .05s = 2590

                          .05      .05

                              s = 51,800
