The sum of two numbers is 44 .One number is 3 times as large as the other. What are the numbers?

Hi Aniya...Lets give this a try
 
                                           X+Y  =44      (Sum of two numbers)
                                                Y=3x        (3 times as large as other)
                                         __________                                                     
 
                                         X +3x=44           Substitute the 3x for  Y
 
                                        4x  =44             
                                      ___    ___
                                         4         4
 
                                          X =11     -->  Put in for X
 
                        11 +Y  =44
                       -11         -11
                     ____________
                             Y  =33     ------->   3 times greater than 11
