Subtract  5y-8 from the sum of 8y-7 and 2y+5.

 

im so confused someone help me its stressing me out :(

Problem:  Subtract  5y-8 from the sum of 8y-7 and 2y+5.

 

Subtract  5y-8 from  (the sum of 8y-7 and 2y+5)

Subtract  5y-8 from  10y-2             

         [note: 'sum' means add the x coefficients then add the constants separately.]

  5y+6         [note: subtract the x-coefficients then subtract: (-2)-(-8) = (-2)+8 = 6]

5y - 8 subtract from the sum  of 8y -7 and 2y +5

Treat these quantities just like you would treat any number.

first add 8y - 7 and 2y +5, add the y's you get 10y add the numbers you get -2

8y -5 + 2y +5 = 10y -2

Now subtract 5y-8 from 10y, 

10y - 2 - (5y - 8)    put the parenthesis because the sign is negative and must be distributed to 5y and -8

10y - 2 - 5y + 8      Notice the sign change in -8

5y + 6                    this is what you get.

 

8y -7 + 2y +5 - (5y -8) = 5y + 6
