Multiplying numbers with exponents:

 

Multiply the coefficients of the bases.  Add the exponents of common bases.

 

 

For example,   (8x²)(7rx³) = (8 * 7) * r^{(0 + 1)} * x^{(2 + 3)} = 56rx⁵

 

 

Dividing numbers with exponents.

 

Divide the coefficients of the bases.  Subtract the exponents of common bases.

 

For example,  (7c⁴) / (21c⁸) = (7 / 21) * c^{(4 - 8)} = (1 / 3)c^-4

 

 

When we have a negative exponent, we perform the reciprocal of the base associated with than exponent to make it positive.
