The sum of two numbers is 43 . The larger number is 9 more than the smaller number. What are the numbers?

its important that this is solved i have been laboring over this question for the last 30 mins and cant solve it so plz solve or help me solve it

I will start you out.  Let's assign...

 

    x=smaller number

x+9=larger number

 

The problem states when added, they equal 43.  So...

(smaller#) + (larger#) = 43

       x       +    (x+9)    = 43

 

Now combine like terms and solve for "x".

Substitute back into to each number assignment above and simplify.
