Patrick's pants got tighter. He decided to reduce his chocolate habit by 3 kisses each day .on Saturday he ate 3 fewer kisses than he did on Friday. On Sunday he ate 3 fever than he had on Saturday; and so on through Thursday. At the end of Thursday he realized that he had eaten only 98 chocolates during the last seven days. how many did he eat on the Friday he decided to cut back?

If x is the number of kisses eaten on Friday, we can determine the number of kisses eaten each day like this.

 

Friday = x

Saturday = X-3

Sunday = x-6

Monday = x-9

Tuesday = x-12

Wednesday = x-15

Thursday = x-18

 

Sum the above for the 7 days.

 

x + x-3 + x-6 + x-9 + x-12 + x-15 + x-18 = 98

7x - 63 = 98

 

Combine like terms and solve for x

7x = 161

x = 23

 

Patrick ate 23 kisses on the Friday he decided to cut back.
