word problem multiplication/or division with mix number (question 2)

Question

A construction crew has just finished building a road. The road is 8 kilometers long. If the crew worked for 3 1/3
days, how many kilometers of road did they build each day? (Assume they built the same amount each day.)

 

Write your answer as a mixed number in simplest form.

8 km was built in 3 1/3 days, write the days as fraction

     1       3*3 +1      10

3  ---- =  --------  =  ----- days    this is how you cover mixed numbers to fraction.

     3          3             3

 

Now divide 8 km by 10/3 days

      10         3        24       12         2

8 ÷ --- = 8*----- = ----- =  ---- = 2 ----

       3         10       10        5          5 

 

You could have just done it as  8/10/3 = 8*3/10 change the first / sign to * sign and flip the fraction at the bottom= 12/5 reduce the fraction to its simplest form  12/5 then write it in mixed numbers again. 12 divide by 5 gives 2 this is a whole number, 5*2=10 is not 12, we have 2 remaind after division by 5,  written as 2/5 so you get 

2 2/5 km of road was build per day.
