Question

A farmer's land is separated into sections of size whole number 2 fraction 5/6 acres. Suppose there are 10 such sections. How many acres of land does the farmer own?

 

Write your answer as a mixed number in simplest form.

Farmer has 10 sections, where each section is 2 and 5/6 acres.

The whole number 2 is how many sixths? 

The answer is 12/6.

So, 2 and 5/6 is actually 17/6.

Multiply by 10 sections to get a total of 170/6.

170 divide 6 is 28.3 acres of land.

As I understand it, each section's size is given, in acres, as two & five sixths.  Each section therefore is 17 / 6 acres.

 

Ten such sections would therefore be 170 / 6 acres, or 85 / 3 (reduced), or

14 & one fourth acres.  <---28 & 1/4  TERRIBLE MISTAKE...sorry (85/3 IS correct, though!)
