The total sale from the first store is 2C since the candles sold for $2 each.
The total sale from the 2nd store is C+3 since they charge the number of candles +$3
If the total sales are the same
2C = C+3
And we can solve this for C
subtract C from both sides
2C - C = C-C+3
C = 3
In other words, in order for the total sales to be the same at each store, three candles would have to have been sold.
