A 14 foot piece of string is cut into 2 pieces so that the longer piece is 2 feet longer than the shorter one. If the shorter piece is x feet long. Find the lengths of both pieces.

Based on the question, the shorter piece is X feet long. So the longer piece should be x+2 feet long.

so the equation is x+x+2=14

2x+2=14

2x=12

x=6

 

So the shorter piece is 6 feet long, the longer piece is 8 feet long.
