It takes you 2x+1minutes to walk to the grocery store.On they way back,it takes you 4x-3 minutes,which is four minutes longer.How long did it take you to walk to the grocery store? How long did it take you to walk back.

From the problem description, we know that:

4x-3 minutes is 4 minutes longer than 2x+ 1 minutes.

 

This can be expressed in an equation as:

 

(4x - 3) = (2x + 1) + 4

 

Now solve for x getting all the x terms on one side of the equation and all the numbers on the other side.

 

2x = 8

x = 4

 

We can find the time to walk to the store and back now that we know x.

 

Time to walk to store = 2x + 1 = (2)(4) + 1 = 9 minutes.

 

Time to walk back = 4x-3 = (4)(4)-3 = 13 minutes 

 

The time to walk back is 4 minutes more than the time to walk to the store so our answer checks out!
