We will answer what time the tourist has to pay for, then use that to calculate the distance.

The total trip takes 2 hours.  Thus, if the tourist spends x time in the taxi, the tourist spends 2 - x time walking.

 Thus, as the car travels 50 mph, and the tourist walks at 4 mph, the tourist travels

50 x + 4 (2 - x).  The destination is 31 miles away, so 50 x + 4 (2 - x) = 31.  50x + 8 - 4x = 31  46x = 23  x = 1/2  Then, the cab travels 50 x = 50 * 1/2 = 25
