3x + y = -1 equation 1
4x + 2y = 2 equation 2
multiply equation 1 by -2 so that
you can add the equations together
and eliminate the y variable.
-2(3x + y) = -2(-1)
-6x -2y = 2
-6x - 2y = 2 -2(equation 1)
4x + 2y = 2 equation 2
---------------
-2x = 4 sum
x = 4/-2 = -2
Replace x with -2 in one of the original equations
3x + y = -1
3(-2) + y = -1
-6 + y = -1
y = 5
The point of intersection of the two lines
is the point (-2,5)
