A coffee distributor needs to mix a Queen City coffee blend that normally sells for $8.60 per pound with a Gazebo coffee blend that normally sells for $14.20 per pound to create 50 pounds of a coffee that can sell for $9.61 per pound. How many pounds of each coffee should they mix?

We need to use a system of equations to solve this problem. 

 

Let Q be the weight of Queen city blend used and G be the weight of Gazebo coffee blend used to make the mixture. 

 

Q + G = 50 (1)

 

14.20G + 8.60Q = 50 (9.61)

 

14.20G + 8.60Q = 480.5 (2)

 

Finally solve for G and Q by using either elimination or substitution. 

 

We use 8.93g of Gazebo blend coffee and 41.07g of Queen city blend to make our 50 pounds of coffee.
