Find their rate

Along the beach, a man and a woman walks towards each other. If they are 1 km apart and the man walks twice as fast as the woman, they will meet in 10 minutes.

Why km/min?

You can measure the speed in km/min or km/hr.  I chose to use km/min because the distance was given in terms of km and the time was given in minutes.  An alternative would be to convert minutes to hours first by dividing 10 by 60.

10 min = 10/60 hr = 1/6 hr

So, (2x)(1/6) + (x)(1/6) = 1

                          (1/2)x = 1

                                x = 2 km/hr
