Tom leaves Los Angeles averaging 65mi/h. Michelle leaves for Los Angeles one hour later than Tom from the same location. She travels the same route averaging 70mi/h. When will she pass Tom

65t=70t-70
65t-70t=-70
-5t=-70
5t=70
t=70/5
t=14 hours
after 14 hours they are side by side, then Michelle will pass Tom because she is going 10 mph faster

When you get to the part of 65t-70t=-70 and you add 70t to both sides it cancels out the right side. 
65t-70t=-70
    +70t=+70
      0    =   0

you simplify the left side first to get -5t
look at your work, you are adding 70t to the left side but adding 70 without the "t" to the right side
you can only add the same thing to both sides, you can't add different things to one side and the other
my work is correct
