560 tickets are sold at a baseball game. The lower level costs $9.50, and the upper level cost $10.00. $5,512 is sold in total. How many tickets where sold of each?

Let's use L and U to represent to amount of tickets for the lower and upper level, respectively.

We know L + U = 560 --> the two must add up top the total amount of tickets

We know 9.5L + 10U = 5,512  --> The total price is equal to the amount of lower level tickets and upper level tickets times their respective costs.

 

Now manipulate equation 1 to get U = 560 -L

Plug this into equation 2

 

9.5L + 10(560 - L) = 5512

 

9.5L - 10L = 5512 - 5600

-.5L = -88

L = 176

 

So U = 560 - 176 = 384

 

So we have

L = 176

U = 384
