You are enjoying a nice summer day at the beach. You throw a handful of sand up from the bottom of a hole with an initial velocity of 32 feet per second. The sand must rise 17 feet above the release point to clear the edge of the hole. Is that enough speed to get the sand out, of had you better duck?

h(t) = -16t^2 + 32t - 17

complete the square to convert to vertex form

-16(t^2 -2t +1) - 17 +16

-16(t-1)^2 -1

vertex = maximum point = (1,-1) a height of -1 foot after 1 second

nope

it will never get out of the hole, close though, just 1 foot short
