A pizza costs 7.50 Ech additional topping is 1.35. If the total bill was 12.50 how many toppings were ordered. Define a variable and write an equation for each situation and solve.

The Equation:

 

7.50 + (1.35 * x) = 12.50

 

subtract 7.50 from both sides of the equation  giving:

 

1.35 * x = 5.00

 

Divide both sides by 1.35

 

x = 3.7 

 

Since we cannot have partial toppings, the total number of toppings is 3.

 

The three toppings cost 4.05 plus the cost of the pizza equals 11.55.

 

The total bill, 12.50, contains a cost other than the pizza and the toppings, or .95 is not accounted for in the question.
