Question

One kind of candy sells for 89 cents per kilogram. Another sells for $1.10 per kilogram. How many kilograms of each kind will need to be used for 30 kilograms of a mixture to sell for 96 cents per kilogram?

Let x = the candy that sells for $.89/kg

Let y = the candy that sells for $1.10/kg

x + y = 30          x = 30 - y

.89x + 1.10y = .96(30) = 28.80    Multiply by 100

89x + 110y  = 2880         Replace X with 30 - y

89(30 - y) + 110y = 2880

2670 - 89y + 110y = 2880

21y = 210

y = 10 kg at $1.10/kg

x = 30 - 10 = 20 kg at $.89/kg
