379 hamburgers and cheeseburgers were sold on Tuesday. 71 fewer cheeseburgers were sold than hamburgers. How many hamburgers were sold on Tuesday?

How:
379 is your total amount of burgers. This is the beginning of your equation, 379= ... Hamburgers are what you are solving for so that is your X. Cheeseburgers are equal to hamburgers but there are 71 less of them so their variable is X - 71. When these are all put together your equation should be: 379= X + X - 71 which turns into: 379 = 2X - 71. Then, Isolate the variable by adding (+) 71 to both sides. Your equation should look like: 450 = 2X. Now, for the answer, finish isolating X by dividing by 2 to both sides. 450/2 = 225. Your final answer is X= 225 Hamburgers.
 
To double check your answer simply subtract 71 from your answer (225) and add that number (154) and, if it is correct, it should equal 379.
