Let h = the number of hamburgers and c = the number of cheeseburgers.
Then h + c = 379 (for the total number of burgers).
The question then tells us that 71 fewer cheeseburgers were sold than hamburgers.
This means that (# of hamburgers) - (# of cheeseburgers) = 71 or
h - c = 71.
h + c = 379
h - c = 71
By eliminating c, we get
2h = 450 and
h = 225
We can double check our answer by plugging h into either of the equations. For example:
225 + c = 379 so c = 154.
379-154 is indeed 71, so we know our answer is correct.
