Let the distance be d miles
Time taken to go = d/24
Time taken on the return trip =d/18
Total time for round trip = d/24 +d/18 = 4.9
Solve the equation . you get d = 50.4 miles.

A cyclist traveled at a rate of 24mi/hr to visit a nearby town. The cyclist averaged 18mi/hr on the return trip. If the round trip took 4.9 hours what is the distance to the nearby town?
