tickets to the country fair for four adults and five children cost $33.00. An adult's ticket costs $1.50 more than a child's ticket. Find the cost of an adult's ticket.

4a + 5c = 33

 

a = c + 1.50

 

4(c + 1.50) + 5c = 33

 

4c + 6 + 5c = 33

 

9c = 33 -6

 

9c = 27

 

c= 3

 

adult ticket is 4a + 5 x 3 = 33, therefore 4a = 33 - 15, so 4a = 18, and 1 adult ticket is 18/4 = 4.50 (which is $3+$1.50)

 

to check 4.50 x 4 + 5 x 3 = 18 + 15 = 33

Let x be the cost of a child's ticket, then an adult's ticket will cost  x + $1.50 ( more means addition)

 

The cost for four adults is 4*(x+$1.50)

 

The cost for five children will be 5*x = 5x

 

The total cost is the sum of the cost for adults and children:

 

4(x + $1.50) + 5x = $33.00
