Which ordered pair is the vertex of y=|x+5|-1

The order pair should simply be (-5,1). Think of it in the following example y=|x-+h| plus or minus K

k is the vertical displacement which in term is the y have in the vertex.  The h will be simply the horizontal displacement simply the x. all you have to do is change the value then you have you x. If there is a number beside the x just simply divide h by it .

Since |x+5| is nonnegaitve, the vertex happens when x+5=0, that is at x=-5. Plug this value into function to get y=|-5+5|-1=-1; 

 

Answer: (-5,-1)
