Question

Two numbers are in the ratio of 3 to 4. If 9 is subtracted from each, they are in a ratio of 3 to 5. Find the two numbers.

Suppose the two number are A and B then

3A       = 4B

3(A-9) = 5(B-9)  -->  3A - 27 = 5B - 45

 

3A - 27 = 5B - 45

3A        = 4B

     - 27 =   B - 45

 

B = 45 - 27

B = 18

 

3A = 4B

3A = 4(18)

3A = 72

  A = 24
