Find the time

Question

A marketing manager travels 1,080 miles in a jet and than an additional 240 miles by car. If the car ride takes one hour longer than the jet ride takes, and if the rate of the jet is 6 times the rate of the car, find the time the manager travels by jet and find the time the manager travels by car

                       rate              *      time      =     distance

car                   x                          240/x              240

jet                   6x                       1080/6x  =       1080

 

r*t=d means (divide both sides by r and get)t=d/r.

 

So the car ride is one more hour than the jet ride....means....

 

1080/6x + 1 = 240/x   reduce to make things easier

180/x + 1 = 240/x     multiply all terms by x and get

180 + x = 240

x = 60

 

plug in to find the 2 times and the two rates, then check and answer the question.

60 mph for 4 hours is 240.

360 mph for 3 hours is 1080.

car ride is 1 more hour than the jet ride.
