Prior to departing, Taya noticed that the car did not have a full tank of gasoline. In fact, the car's fuel gauge indicated that the 12 1/2 gallon tank was only 1/4 full. If Taya paid $33.75 at the local gas station to fill the car's tank with gasoline, how much did the gas station charge per gallon of gasoline.

If the tank was only ¼ full, how many gallons of gas did she put in the tank? What's 3/4 (how much she's filling) of the tank that's 12½ in capacity? Simply multiply:

 

3/4 of 12½ = ? (remember, "of" means multiply)

 

3/4 x 12½ = ? (let's convert to improper fractions for easy multiplying)

 

3/4 x 25/2 = ? (multiply across the top and bottom)

 

                = 75/8 or 9 3/8 gallons was put in the tank. To find how much each gallon cost, simply divide the dollar amount by the number of gallons:

 

33.75/9.375 = $3.60/gallon
