Norway has had three times as many rulers as Liechtenstein. If the total number of rulers for both countries is 56, find the number of rulers for Norway and the number for Liechtenstein.

Let N = # of rulers from Norway

Let L = # rulers from Lichtenstein

 

N = 3L.  Norway had 3 times as many rulers

L + N =56.  There were a total of 56 rulers

 

L + 3L = 56

4L = 56

L = 56/4

L = 14

 

N = 3L = 3(14) = 42

 

Norway had 42 rulers

Lichtenstein had 14 rulers
