Hi Rebecca,
Let's begin by writing expressions for both <S>arah's age and <T>om's age in terms of Andrews age (x):
T = 2x + 4 (4 more than twice Andrew's age)
S = 5x - 8 (8 less than five times Andrew's age)
Since we are told that Tom and Sarah are twins (the same age), we can equate our expressions for Tom's age and Sarah's age and use that equation to solve for Andrew's age (x):
Tom's age = Sarah's age
2x + 4 = 5x - 8 [equation for Andrew's age]
Thanks for submitting this problem and glad to help.
God bless, Jordan.
