The Royal Fruit Company produces two types of fruit drinks. The first type is 45%pure fruit juice, and the second type is 70%pure fruit juice. The company is attempting to produce a fruit drink that contains 

50%pure fruit juice. How many pints of each of the two existing types of drink must be used to make 

110 pints of a mixture that is 

50% pure fruit juice?

Let x = number of pints of 45% juice

 

Then 110 - x = number of pints of 70% juice

 

110 = number of pints of 50% juice

 

0.45x + 0.70(110 - x) = 0.50(110)

 

0.45x + 77 - 0.70x = 55

 

                -0.25x = -22

 

                       x = 88 pints

 

Answer:  use 88 pints of 45% juice and 22 pints of 70% juice to obtain a mixture that is 50% juice.
