Turn the words into mathematical expressions. Difference is say subtract. "A number" is saying an unknown variable (call it x...).

 

one more than 6 times a number is the same as 6x+1

four more than three times the same number is the same as 3x+4

Taking the difference between the two means 6x+1-3x+4

Simplifying, this gives us 3x+5
