best rental charges a daily fee plus a mileage fee for renting its cars. Bill was charged $132 for 3 days and 300 miles. His friend Myles was charged $235 for 5 days and 600 miles. what does the Best Rental charge per day and per mile?

Let D = Daily fee  

Let M = Mileage fee  

 

Bill:      3*D + 300*M = 132

Myles:  5*D + 600*M = 235  

 

Multiply the 1st equation by (-2) and add it to the 2nd  

 

-6*D - 600*M = -264

 5*D + 600*M = 235

 

-D = -29

D = 29  

 

Plug this value in to the 1st equation and solve for M  

 

3*(29) +300*M = 132

87 + 300*M = 132

300*M = 45

M = 0.15  

 

The charge is $29 per day and 15 cents per mile  

 

Check:  3*29 + 300*0.15 = 87 + 45 = $132  

            5*29 + 600*0.15 = 145 + 90 = $235
