A giant Redwood in California can grow to as tall as 360 feet with some of the smallest pine cones. A larger redwood tree may have up to 11,000 cones. How long does it take for a pine cone to fall to the ground?

360 ft = (0.5)(9.8 m/sec²)t²               convert meters to feet (1m = 3.28081ft)

360 ft = (0.5)(32.15184 ft/sec² )t²     multiply

360 ft = 16.07592t²                           divide both sides by 16.07592

22.3937417 ≈ t²                                square root both sides

4.7322 ≈ t

 

The cone hits the ground in just under 5 seconds.
