Sarah,

an input/output table is a table listing the domain (or x values) to use in the formula. Each x gives you an answer for y. Then you simply place those values for y in the table. IT starts like this:

x y

-2

-1

0

1

2

now solve the equation for each y and place those in the table.

y = 3x + 2, so for x= -2 you get y = 3*(-2) + 2 = -6 + 2 = -4 Now the table is starting to fill in:

x y

-2 -4

-2 -4

-1

0

1

2

continue with x = -1, so y = 3*(-1) + 2 = -3 + 2 = -1

x y

-2 -4

-2 -4

-1 -1

0

1

2

ok, you try it. keep going until you use all the values for x. You can even try some other values for x and predict what they might be by looking at the trend on the table.

good luck!, kim
