start by letting x = one of the numbers

 

the other number would be 5x  (one number is 5 times another

 

 

and the difference 5x - x = 44      (the difference between the numbers is 44

 

 

so 4x = 44

 

x = 11

 

5x = 55 

 

so the two numbers are 55 and 11
