One cup of gumbo and 2 salads were bought for $12.25, someone else bought 4 cups of gumbo and 4 salads for $31. How much does each cup of gumbo and salad cost?

g = cost of Gumbo

s = cost of salad

 

g + 2s = 12.25

4g + 4s = 31            multiply both sides of top equation buy 2

 

2g + 4s = 24.50

4g + 4s = 31            subtract top equation from bottom

 

2g = 6.50                  divide both sides by 2

g = 3.25                    substitute into first equation

 

3.25 + 2s = 12.25     subtract 3.25 from both sides

2s = 9.00

s = 4.50

 

 

Check:

4(3.25) + 4(4.50)

13.00 + 18.00
