When learning to drive a car, I calculated that 60 mph was 88 ft/sec.  That is useful to know when thinking about stopping distance and how close to follow the car in front of me and ...
In this problem, 90 mph is 1.5 times that (so I calculated in my head 88+44 = 132 ft/sec for 90 mph  -- so it is faster.
