I would use the basic rule that the divisor*the quotient+remainder=dividend.

 

That is: if 50/6 =8 remainder 2, then 6*8+2+50.

 

In your problem, we'd get:

 

12(X-3) + 1=x²    solving you'd get

12x-36+1=x²

           0  =x²-12x+35

           0  =(x-5)(x-7)

          0=x-5 or 0=x-7

            x=5 or x=7

 

Let's check x=7.... 49/4=12 R1

let's check x=5.....25/2=12 R1

 

So both answers work!!!!!!!
