a crew is lengthening a road. Let y represent the total length of the road. Let x represent the number of days the crew has worked. Suspose that x and y are related by the equation 52+2x+y. What was the road;s length when the crew started working? What is the change in the roads length per day?

The equation doesn't look complete, may be you mean y=2x+52. In that case if you assign x=0 (before day 1) y=52 (length of the road). At the end of day one y= 2+52 = 54 so the length has increased by 2. so the road length changes 2 per day.
