I'm assuming that the 5/6 and 1/4 are fractional coefficients like this: 5/6(6x - 12y) - 1/4(8x - 4y). In that case, first distribute the fractional coefficients (remember to distribute the minus sign in front of the 1/4).
5/6(6x - 12y) - 1/4(8x - 4y) = 5x - 10y - 2x + y
Now add like terms.
5x - 10y - 2x + y = 3x - 9y
