x and x+3 are the numbers
x^2+(x+3)^2=269
x^2+x^2+6x+9=269
2x^2+6x+9-269=0
2x^2+6x-260=0
x^2+3x-130=0
(x+13)(x-10)=0
x-10=0
x=10
x+3=13
also...
x+13=0
x=-13
x+3=-10
2x^2+7x=15
2x^2+7x-15=0
(2x-3)(x+5)=0
x+5=0
x=-5
also...
2x-3=0
2x=3
x=3/2 also works
the second problem...
2x^2=5x+17
2x^2-5x-17=0
is the wording wrong ? is it 15 times the number ? try the quadratic formula !
