If I had 7 oranges and I take away 4 oranges then I have 3 oranges.  I then put 3 oranges back so I end up with 6 oranges.  Just think of s as oranges.

3s=s+s+s

-4s=-s-s-s-s  

 

7s+3s-4s=s+s+s+s+s+s+s+s+s+s-s-s-s-s   notice I changed the order of the terms from the question.  You can always do this with addition and subtraction

 

=s+s+s+s+s+s+s+s+s+(s-s)-s-s-s     (s-s)=0 and so a little thought gives

=s+s+s+s+s+s+0+0+0+0

=6s  count them!

 

Alternatively,  7s-4s+3s=(7-4+3)s=6s

 

If you have a term like 8s, then 8 is called the coefficient of s.  You will get used to collecting like terms...in this case terms in s and simply summing the coefficients to get a net result.

 

For example:  2s-4s+3m-2m+s

 

First collect terms:  2s-4s+s+3m-2m

 

We can reorder if you like:  2s+s-4s+3m-2m

 

Now you can sum the coefficients: (2+1-4)s+(3-2)m

 

and you get:  -s+m  which looks a little nicer rearranged to m-s
